"Despite the obvious filial connection to her distinguished and well established father, Kim Scouller is clearly a creative spirit in her own right. Superficially there may be some similarities in her work to that of her father’s as stylistically speaking; they are both loosely connected to the belle painture school of Scottish modern painting. That said however, her paintings are distinguished by their very concentrated focus on a single motif-be it a human head in her penetrating portrait studies, or a jar of flowers from her succulent still lifes. The visual impact of intense concentration found in these pictures is further heightened by such a strong sense of close proximity to the presence of the subject that the viewer is made acutely aware of the act of looking itself. This “close-up” effect is created by an almost Degas-like use of cropped compositions and striking viewpoints. With such optically oriented pictorial arrangements the artist replaces any tendency towards banal narrative with much more intriguing psychological allure. These paintings are permeated with an evocative mood in which the surrounding space and atmosphere is as crucially important as the depiction of recognisable objects. The subjects, like that of many modern masters, may be conventional but their sensitive and imaginative treatment is certainly not in these intriguing paintings of Kim Scouller."
